COUNCILMAN DOMENIC M. RECCHIA JR. INAUGURATES MARK TWAIN SCHOOL’S NEW TECHNOLOGY CENTER

Today, Councilman Domenic M. Recchia Jr. cut the ribbon to officially inaugurate the new technology center at IS 239 Mark Twain School for the Gifted and Talented in Coney Island.

The technology center will bear the Councilman’s name as homage to his unyielding support and resources to advancing the educational and cultural programs at Mark Twain.

“We live in a truly global society made possible by free trade, a free flow of capital, and of course the Internet. It is an honor and a great pleasure to provide a new technology center that will allow the students of Mark Twain to truly become citizens of the world with a renewed access to the web and all of its educational resources,” said the Councilman.

“The technology center at Mark Twain is just the beginning. I hope to see more schools throughout my district and other boroughs follow suit and help put our city at the forefront of technology,” he added.

The Mayor’s Preliminary Budget: Sound plan but I have reservations.

Today’s Preliminary Budget, following on the Governor’s proposed Executive Budget last month, gives us all hope that the worst effects of the economic downturn are finally starting to pass. We are pleased that there are no new major cuts or tax increases in the Mayor’s proposals.

I was also pleased to know there were no new budget cuts proposed this time around. However, the City Council and I need to look more closely at the cuts proposed in the mayor’s November plan and ensure that the public receives adequate, undisrupted municipal services from our firefighters, sanitation workers, and others. It is imperative that we keep the quality of life for New Yorkers at the forefront as we face tough fiscal decisions.

What the law says about MUNI METERS and SINGLE-SPACE METERS

Hi everyone. In case you missed it, last night’s newscast featured a story on single- space meters and the fines associated with parking at a broken meter. Please see the city law below so you are not unfairly fined:

*If a muni-meter is broken, the motorist should buy a receipt at another muni on the block. If all the muni-meters or single-space meter on a block are not working, the motorist can park up to the duration of the meter (i.e. one hour if there is a one hour regulation, two hours if there is a two hour regulation, etc.)

*When there is a single-space meter then the motorist can park for up to the duration of that meter regulation.

*If all muni-meters or single-space  in a park field or on a block are missing or broken, a person shall be allowed to park there up to the maximum amount of time otherwise lawfully permitted by such muni-meters in said park field or block.

Essentially, if the meter is broken, try to find one that isn’t. If they are all broken, you park there for the allowed duration permitted by the meter.
